“Fortune favours the bold” – Virgil

It’s such a simple little quote, isn’t it?  What is luck really about, anyway – and can we change our own luck?

Well, I’ve always believed so!

I love the idea that fortune favours the bold because I truly believe we shape our own destiny with the energy we put out and the opportunities we draw in.

What Does Being Bold Mean?

It seems like an easy definition, right?

Usually, being bold means heading with confidence towards the goals we set, and achieving them.

Being bold can be difficult, though!  I’ve definitely had my fair share of being bold experiences over the last few months. Sometimes, the bold actions we take are successful, and sometimes, not so much.

Don’t let the “not so much” part get you down, though!  Just this past week, for example, I made a bold move in asking a client for an hourly rate I felt I deserved and had been paid before. Unfortunately, I lost the client – and potentially the connection.

Should I be kicking myself?  Probably.  I’ll admit it’s a little disheartening.

But I’m boldly moving on, searching for the next opportunity.

3 Ways To Take Bolder Actions In Your Life

People often ask me what I do “differently” to them, how I seek out opportunities. My answer is quite simple – I’m not doing anything differently except taking an action.

It’s so easy for us to be paralyzed where we are, isn’t it? We get comfortable, we settle with what we have – and we forget to be bold enough to seek out our own opportunities.

Here are my top three ways you can be bold and start taking action today:

1. Stop Being Afraid Of Who You Are

Motivational Monday 100 Connections

It’s taken me years to figure out what I really want to do with my life.

As some of you know, I started off as an English literature major, then switched faculties to Business and checked out Marketing, before working for five years in product marketing for products I didn’t really believe in. Then, I ran a full-time English tutoring business for a year.

Even though I was perfectly happy running my tutoring business, I had always known I wanted to move to Europe. So, I boldly packed up my house (well, I sold it), my stuff, and my beautiful dog Kiara and headed to the UK.  Three countries later, I’ve realized that Barcelona is the place for me.

Don’t be afraid to change.

For example – imagine that I had not taken the action to apply to a Master’s program I wasn’t sure I’d get into, or to move to a country with a lower standard of living just because I had once fallen in love with Europe.   I definitely wouldn’t be where I am today!

2. Realize Your Worth

Now, I’m not saying you should let your abilities go to your head, but do remember that whether you’re an English teacher, entrepreneur or even an employee, you should charge what you’re worth.

Do your research!   Check out what people around you charge for your services, and what services they provide. What do you do better? What’s your competitive advantage?

3. Act

Act? That’s a bit of a general piece of advice, you say.Motivational Monday 71 Right Track Take Action

I think when we fail to act, sometimes it’s really about fear. We are afraid to change, afraid of the consequences of our new choices and most likely, of the unknown.

Life coach Susie Moore has a few questions you can ask yourself to see if you’re ready to let go of your fear and take action in some areas of your life.

Sometimes, even a small action in advance can make a huge difference.

One of the best job opportunities I currently have I had the chance to apply for simply because of an email I sent months before.  There was job posting, no opportunity – but I thought I’d ask a former colleague anyway to keep an eye for job postings in here area.  Six months later, I received an email – I had almost forgotten that I’d sent it.

But I had sent it.

That tiny action months ago, which only took a few minutes – has made a huge difference today.

Be Bold Enough To Create Your Own Luck

Well, if “fortune favours the bold”, does that mean we can make our own luck? I definitely believe so!

Here are a few ways you can be bold today:

  • Ask for the salary you deserve
  • Try something new.  Anything
  • Create an ad to find new clients and respond to client “wanted” ads the minute you see them
  • Go on an adventure – you’ll be surprised what you find
  • Make a list of three things you will do this month – and take an action on every one of them.

Just do it!  Don’t forget to visualize the opportunity, too. Close you eyes, squeeze them tight, and imagine the feeling of having exactly what you want.  The better you can feel it, the closer you are to making it reality.

What is the boldest action you’ve ever taken? I’d love to hear from you in the comments below.  I read and respond to every comment!

Have a lovely and productive week!
